I think Stockard Channing and Martin Sheen had a backstory in mind, even if it wasn't really cannon. On paper it was probably a terrible one, but it was the way that Jed and Abbey acted around each other that showed that there really no one else in the world for either them. They weathered so much because they clearly foundtheir strength in each other.
