I don't mind talking about why Ugly Betty was groundbreaking. I just figured it had all been said before and better, so I would just skip on ahead to my commentary. Short version is that Ugly Betty was light years ahead of most shows in terms of diversity without ever resorting to tokenism (half the cast was Latino, including the lead actress, not to mention the African-American characters). Even the extras, guest stars and day players were all multi-ethic. The show handled issues of transgender and coming out with sensitivity even if the plot lines were totally over the top. But rather than me go on and on, just read this really sweet article by a EW staffer. :-)
