When random distractions go elsewhere...

So... I has a tumbler now. I noticed within the past year that LJ has become far less Fandom Central than it has in years past. Problem is, I'm in a fairly challenging program and I need my distractions to keep me sane! Fortunately, Fandom Central hasn't seemed to have disappeared, just switch platforms. So off to Tumbler I have gone, but I don't intend to close up shop over here just yet. This is still the main home for Quaggy fanfic and I want to be able to keep up with those who are still on LJ. Besides, I prefer LJ as a platform to have a discussion, so if I do ever post something that I've generated (and we all know how infrequently that happens) I'll make sure it lives at both places. Okay, off to go be distracted by shiny things!

I still haven't sussed out the whole tumblr thing. I look at the pretty pictures, but no one seems to talk? They just reblog the pretty? I like to talk too...

No, people talk too. It's hard to get a conversation going, but people find ways. For example, sometimes they reblog what someone else has written and add their own comments after (it's very clear who said what) and then the original poster reblogs with their response. It just not nearly as easy as LJ.

What I would suggest is finding a couple of Tumbler accounts to lurk around, just to get a feel of the land. Then if you think this might be for you, sign up!

Yeah, I've seen that but it's unsatisfactory conversation wise (at least to me), because you can't just jump in (like LJ, where I've found people to be super welcoming if you comment, even if they have no idea who you are). But the pretty probably makes up for it :-)

I do sort of follow a few people's tumblrs for shows I'm watching (it's fun seeing the gifs etc) but the ones I don't know in real life I interact with on LJ still. I should probably sign up just so I can make following them more easy, at the moment I just google.

That's why I don't do Tumblr....I have never really gotten the hang of creating any of the visual/graphics arts....I wish someone could sit over my shoulder and teach me. :-/

So for me, 'fandom' is 85% discussion, 15% sharing the pretty.

Tumblr has the percentages reversed, possibly even more so. So I just don't get the kind of fandom energy that I need from that. :-(

Yep to all. Plus it seems like people are so young. Not everyone, but I realised just now that a fic I was squeeing over that someone wrote for her friend, was for the friend's 19th birthday. Eek.

Everyone's so young. The girl I've been chatting OUaT with (who has some great commentary and insights) is just graduating high school.
