I finally have (am making) a window of time to really read your thing! Ok, my thoughts.
I must have watched Charlie hugging Dani at least 23 times!! It was so perfect. It’s not patronizing or sexual or obnoxious. Charlie hugs Dani like a little kid would, just completely open and happy. It’s hilarious!!
I know! I've commented on this several times too. I think it was such a fine line to walk and a great choice. He's cute, she's cute, we don't know their relationship yet, so the viewer is all set to read into that hug...something. Offensiveness or UST or something. But, as you say, the WAY he did that was perfect and was (IMO) one of the first very clear messages about who his character is.
The crime scene teaser is just wonderful on so many levels… mostly because of every single one of Charlie’s lines: “Hey! Do you not see the gun?” “What do you have up there? A Costco?” “Oh jeez, I just bought this suit.” “He threw a toaster at me!” And then how he was so happy that Dani referred to him as her partner.
That scene is one of my favorites in the whole series. At the start you get that CLASSIC shot, panning around Charlie as he stands on the cliff, then you get the great stuff in the woods, and at the end, William Sanderson! (I absolutely love the relationship between his character and DL in this ep.)
And then the "partner" thing, which I so love because it's an early example of their dynamic, where he sort of celebrates their relationship and she's sort of childish and defensive about it. It's cute. :-)
And this is another place where I'm going to grumble about the song licensing thing, cause it's a FAR SUPERIOR scene with Gram Rabbit's Bloody Bunnies over it. Really, it's fantastic. Must find a way to show you.

Ok, more in a bit.
