quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Muse)
So I kind of had an anniversary that I totally forgot about on the day thanks to interesting real life stuff. But 10 years ago this past Monday, I officially posted my first fanfic. Quags was born a little but before that, but the fic thing was kind of a big deal. I never thought that 10 years later that I would still be writing. That people would still like my stuff. That I would still be branching out into new fandoms. That LJ would turn into such a ghost town. :-(

On my 5th anniversary, I offered to write 100 word drabbles for anyone who would give me a promp and a fandom. I would love to do that again, but I'm not sure if anyone is still around enough to be interested. (The offer stands, though.) So if anyone can thing of a good way for me to commemorate what has been a interesting part of my life, please let me know.

Missed posting on Christmas, but didn't feel like posting on New Year's Eve like I have in years past. Fortunately, the first line of this particular song from Christmas Eve On Sesame Street (which you all know how much I love) is quite appropriate. I posted the video of it a few years back if you want to hear the whole song.

Keep Christmas With You All Through The Year

When Christmas time is over and presents put away, don't be sad
There'll be so much to treasure about this Christmas day and the fun we've had
So may happy feelings to celebrate with you
And, oh, the good times hurry by so fast
But even when it's over there's something you can do to make Christmas last
Keep Christmas with you
All through the year
When Christmas is over
Save some Christmas cheer
These precious moments
Hold them very dear
And keep Christmas with you
All through the year.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Every year around this time I quote the lyrics to some holiday related song and this year is no different. I've been listening to this song a lot as I walked the holiday-decked streets of DC, so it seemed appropriate. Plus, it really was the year of the Muppet this year.

One More Sleep 'Til Christmas

There magic in the air this evening

Magic in the air
The world is at her best, you know
When people love and care
The promise of excitement is one the night will keep
After all, there's only one more sleep 'til Christmas

The world has got a smile today
The world has got a glow
There's no such thing as strangers when
A stranger says hello
And everyone is family, we're having so much fun
After all, there's only one more sleep 'til Christmas

'Tis the season to be jolly and joyous
With a burst of pleasure, we feel it all right
It's the season when the saints can employ us
To spread the news about peace and to keep love alive

There's something in the wind today
That's good for everyone
Yes, faith is in our hearts today
We're shining like the sun
And everyone can feel it, the feeling's running deep
After all, there's only one more sleep 'til Christmas
After all, there's only one more sleep 'til Christmas Day

And for those of you who never had a chance to see the Muppet Christmas Carol....

Happy Holidays to you and yours! (No matter which holiday it is that you celebrate.) May the coming year be blessed with good health, happiness and security!

Five Years!

quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Pride & Prejudice)
So there was an attack on LJ on my 5th year anniversary. Seems a little ominous, don't you think?

Five years ago today, I posted my very first fic. Actually I posted three. (One of the few times I've ever posted multiple times in one day.) At first, this was nothing but a place where I dumped my West Wing fic, but little by little I started branching out into other fandoms (though I wasn't always successful) and experimented with other fani-sh forms of expression. I even started posting about my life off-line (though those posts are usually friend-locked at the very least). LJ is such a big part of my life now, it's hard to imagine what I would do without it. Twitter just isn't the same and you all know how I feel about Facebook.

So how do I celebrate?  Well, it seemed appropriate to go back to how this all began... with fic. I thought about offering DVD commentary or a fanwank Q&A, but I think new fic is the way to go. Lord knows, I'm a horribly slow writer, but I do seem to turn out 100 word drabbles pretty fast.  So...

In honor of the occasion, give me a fandom and a prompt (or two or three), and I'll give you a 100 word drabble in the next few days (or maybe weeks).

I don't mind branching out into a fandom I haven't written for yet, as long as I'm familiar with it. I actually enjoy trying something new. Though it's always nice to have the excuse to write West Wing too. Can't forget your roots!

Happy Birthday, LJ of mine! Thank you for five year's worth of random distractions!

In case you're new to these parts, I generally quote holiday songs this time of year.  After some debate, I decided to go with something traditional this time around...

Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot and old lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup and surely I’ll buy mine,
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

Harry:  What does this song mean? My whole life, I don't know what this song means. I mean, 'Should old acquaintance be forgot'? Does that mean that we should forget old acquaintances, or does it mean if we happened to forget them, we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot?
Sally: Well, maybe it just means that we should remember that we forgot them or something. Anyway, it's about old friends.
(From When Harry Met Sally)

May next year bring peace, security and, most of all, joy for you and yours, my friends. Happy New Year and Merry Christmas too!

Four years ago, right around this time, I posted my first fic and the legend LJ of Quag E. Mire was born. At first, this was just supposed to be an LJ for my fic, but things expanded a bit.  I've met knew people and got involved with new things and new communities.  But fic was the reason why I started this journal. Since I've been posting all my old stuff over at FF.Net, I've had a chance to go over everything I've written so far.  So for my anniversary, I thought I would do a top ten of my favorite fics. Not surprising, given the fact I've only recently branched out into other fandoms, they are all West Wing fic.  These are they ones that I really think hold up, even if I've improved as a writer.  Please forgive the arrogance. I'm mostly just looking back.

1) Less Traveled By
If I never write another West Wing fic (and I have since, so don't worry), I'll be able to say I went out on a high. I don't know if I'll ever be able to top this one.

2) Left Waiting
At first this started as a prequel to fix What Happens In Hospitals, but it became a strong piece in its own right.  This is one of those pivotal fics where I think my writing style leveled up.

3) Untitled Fic (I sometime refer to this as "Art Imitates Life" or "It Takes A Year")
It's actually pretty unfair of me to include this on my list, since the entry is friend-locked and I have no intention of changing that. I wrote this after my father died, basically borrowing West Wing characters to say what I couldn't on my own back then. I can't objectively judge whether or not it's the best thing I've written. But I like it and it has meaning for me, so it makes the list.

4) Regrets
Another one of those writing breakthrough pieces. Up until this point, I had basically been writing character studies. This fic showed me that I could mess with peoples emotions. (I was trying to come up with a less evil way of putting that, but in the end I decided to call a spade, a spade.)

5) In Bed
I don't know if I'm supposed to admit this about something I wrote, but this fic still makes me laugh.

6) Hobbesian
This is pre-series and I usually never stray from Season 7, but it took a life on its own. (Well, once I finally figured out what was wrong with it. Thanks again for the help, Amy!)  I spend so much time getting into characters' heads that the chance to look at everyone from an outsider's POV was a lot of fun.

7) Expecting
I'm not adopted nor is anyone in my family, but I still manged to make this resonate for a lot of people. That might be one of the things I'm most proud of.

8) Untold Plans
I will never write an opening line better than this one. End of story.

9) Outside Looking In / Inside Looking Out
These two really do have to be read together.  Maybe it was using the quotes and song lyrics, but I managed to dive deeper into Josh and Donna's head than I had previously.

10) Band of Brothers… and a Sister
A mostly un-shippy fic for me, but sometimes that's a good thing.

So that's it.  I thought about doing a separate list of my favorite 100 word drabbles, but I think my ego has been fed enough with this post, don't you?
quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Holidays)
Every year since I started this LJ, I've quoted song lyrics at Christmas. This year I'm going to do something a little different. Thanks to YouTube and the Sesame Street Channel, I offer clips from Christmas Eve On Sesame Street, including two of my favorite songs "True Blue Miracle" and "I Hate Christmas". Everybody has one Christmas movie that they watch every year without fail. This is mine.

True Blue Miracle is one of my favorite Christmas songs.

The older I get, the more I appreciate Oscar's song.

This is my mom's favorite.

This is a classic bit from the movie:

And as an added bonus for Muppet and West Wing fans alike, we have the Muppets singing Carol of the Bells:

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!!

When I look back at 2008, it feels like I lived for five years in these twleve months.  I just passed too many milestones and historic markers (both personal and universal) to really wrap my head around this year or to sum it up with a few words, so I'm not going to even try.

Normally this time of year, I quote song lyrics.  I didn't do so at Christmas, since I posted fic instead, but I would hate to abandon the tradition completely. So...

New Year's Resolutions )

Happy New Year, Everyone!  May 2009 bring you happiness and this year be a little better than the last.

quaggy: Forbidden Forrest scene from the 1st Harry Potter movie (Night)

I love this song.  It's called "Better Days" by the Goo Goo Dolls of their Let Love In album.  It's a Christmas song without mentioning Christmas.  It a New Year's song.  But mostly it's a prayer for the future.  It was pretty popular when it came out, so you all should have heard it before.  Sing with me!!

Better Days
(written by Johnny Rzeznik)

And you asked me what I want this year
and I try to make this kind and clear:
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
'Cause I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
and desire to love and empty things
just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

So take these words and sing out loud
'Cause everyone is forgiven now
'Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

I need some place simple where we could live
And something only you can give
And that's faith and trust and peace while we're alive
And the one poor child who saved this world
And there's ten million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them

So take these words and sing out loud
'Cause everyone is forgiven now
'Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

I wish everyone was loved tonight
And somehow stop this endless fight
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

So take these words and sing out loud
'Cause everyone is forgiven now
'Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

'Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

Happy New Year, Everyone!  Here's to better days!

quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Holidays)

This is my favorite Christmas song.  Most people don't know it because its from Christmas Eve On Sesame Street, a movie they've probably never seen.  But I want to share the words because they truly are beautiful.

True Blue Miracle
(Written by Carol Hall )

I believe in miracles and I can tell you why
Once a year the street I live on sparkles like the sky
All hung with lights for Christmas
Twinkling every where.
The world turns bright for Christmas
And if that isn't a true blue miracle
I don't know what one is.

I believe in miracles. I know because I've seen
Once a year the place I walk is filled with trees of green
And pine cone smells of Christmas
Floating through the air
To jingle bells of Christmas
And if that isn't a true blue miracle
I don't know what one is.

But the greatest wonder of them all
Is not what's happening around you, it's the way
You start to be...
Yes the greatest wonder of them all is how your
Heart is filled with love
You start to light up like a Christmas tree!

Feelings feel so wonderful
You have to let them show
Maybe that's why everyone begins to get a glow
And fill their hearts with Christmas
Spirit they can share
That's the best part of Christmas
And if that isn't a true blue miracle
I don't know what one is

And if that isn't a true blue miracle
I don't know what one is.

Merry Christmas, everyone!  Enjoy the time with your family and friends!
