quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Bang Bang)
I was going to post my Harry Potter blatherings, but then I saw this meme over at [livejournal.com profile] zinke  and decided that that I so would rather do this instead.

Ask me a fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom, lj stuff, fic writing, etc. Questions can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.

List 10 platonic male/female relationships in fiction that you enjoy.

Rules:
1. They interact in canon, preferably in a significant (apply your own interpretation of such) way.
2. They are not related. They can, however, view each other as surrogate family.
3. Neither has confessed or implied romantic love for the other in canon.
4. They have not dated, been married, had sex, or made out in canon, on purpose, and of their own free will.
5. A popular fanon ship is ok (though preferably not your ship) but a canon pairing you wish were just friends is out.
6. Try to avoid using the same character or series twice.

I really couldn't resist this one. It was an excellent exercise for me, since I'm such an utter "best friend" shipper. If a male & female character have close friendship in canon, chances are that I'll be shipping them sooner or later, canon or not. I liked proving to myself that I actually can enjoy a male/female friendship without wishing there was more. As it turned out, all ten pairing were from television shows, though 3 of them you've probably never heard of. While some of these pairing on the list are (or at least could be) active ships, I just like their relationship as is.

I've plenty of fic that I should be trying to finish. I'm only doing this because I gave both [livejournal.com profile] unoriginal_liz and [livejournal.com profile] pheobep prompts and that's the deal. Besides, I like getting drabble prompts.

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble/fic of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. (If you can't write, I'm sure you can make something else.)

First, I don't care how many prompts I get and, yes, you can give me more than one prompt at a time. Second, I will probably be writing 100 word drabbles, since I'll finish those relatively quickly. I do reserve the right to expand a prompt into a larger fic at a latter date.

For this meme, [livejournal.com profile] zinke asked for commentary for Back Against The Wall, the first part of my first and (so far) only series Things Not Meant To Be. She couldn't have chosen a better fic. This was a pretty significant piece for me and so I have a lot to say about it, to the point I nearly did commentary for the whole fic. But if I did that, then I would want to do it for the whole series, and I'm only going to do that if there's a lot of interest. So, rather bite off more than I can chew, I stuck to commenting on the snippet itself and not go into the more spoilery things about the rest of the fic and the rest of the series.

Back Against The Wall snippet - DVD Commentary )
quaggy: "Be Wary of Bored Writers" (Writer)
Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] zinke. Because writers like to talk about what they write about (even if all they write is fic)...

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

You can find all my West Wing fic here and all my non-West Wing fic (including Gilmore Girls, Harry Potter and Avatar: The Last Airbender) over here.

And yes, for drabbles and ficlets, I'll comment on the whole thing. If anybody is interested, that is!

Ship Meme

quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (The Kiss)
I've seen this meme around plenty of places, most recently at [livejournal.com profile] unoriginal_liz and finally decided to give it a shot. It makes a nice change of pace from everything I've been working with over at [livejournal.com profile] keytus_tv.

Tell me a Fandom and I shall respond with my...

1. One True Pairing Ship:
2. Canon Ship:
3. "If this happens I'll stab my eyes out with a spork" Ship:
4. "You are one sick bastard" Ship:
5. "I dabble a little" Ship:
6. "It's like a car crash" Ship:
7. "Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet" Ship:
8. "Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not" Ship:
9. "Everyone else loves it but I just don't feel it" Ship:

....and then YOU can tell me if my answer surprised you or not! ;-P
quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (West Wing)
I originally responded to this over at [livejournal.com profile] zinke as part of her anniversary meme, but figured I should also post it here too, at least partially.

This is one of my favorite scene and contains one of my all-time favorite quotes.

Bartlet is asleep in his bedroom. The phone rings four times before he finally answers it sleepily.

BARTLET: What?

CHARLIE: Good morning, Mr. President. It’s Charlie. I hope...

BARTLET: What could you possibly want right now?

CHARLIE: Sir, it’s 6:30 a.m. and...

BARTLET: In the morning?

CHARLIE: Yes sir. And I wanted to remind you that...

BARTLET: I mean, what in the name of everything holy could you want right now?

CHARLIE: I wanted to remind you that you have a 7:00 a.m. at the Oval Office with senior staff, followed by your security and intelligence briefings, and a meeting with the Chairman of the Fed. Would you like me to have the stewards bring you some coffee and the Washington Post?

BARTLET: Who the hell is this?

CHARLIE: Sir.

BARTLET: And what could you possibly want?

CHARLIE: Sir. I need you to dig in now. It wasn’t a nightmare. You really are the President.

BARTLET: All right.

CHARLIE: I’ll have the stewards bring the coffee to your room.

BARTLET: I’ll get up now.

I miss my show.

Don’t take too long to think about it.
Fifteen books you’ve read that will always stick with you.
First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes.
Copy the instructions into your own post.

I had to do this quickly without looking a [livejournal.com profile] flippet answers, since we have simliar taste in books and just looking at hers will influence mine. I started putting them in the order of their importance to me, but I gave that up. Now it's mostly the order I thought of them. Here we go...

1) Wrinkle In Time by Madaleine L'Engle
2) To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
3) Sabriel by Garth Nix
4) The Facts and Fictions of Minna Pratt by Patricia MacLachlan
5) Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis
6) Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
7) A Ring of Endless Light by Madalein L'Engle
8) Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan
9) The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
10) Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto (No, not manga. She's an actual Japanese novelist I discovered when I was still in high school.)
11) His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (And The Amber Spyglass, if I'm only allowed one book of the trilogy.)
12) Persuasion by Jane Austen
13) The Nine Tailors by Dorothy Sayers
14) Summers At Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn
15) Coraline by Neil Gaiman

I saw this at [profile] dudley_doright and couldn't resist.

You have received this note because someone thinks you are a literary geek. Copy the questions into your own note, answer the questions, and tag any friends who would appreciate the quiz, including the person who sent you this.

As usual, I'm not going to tag. Just do this because you think it's fun. (And trust me, it is.)

I was looking through my files when I stummbled across this meme that I had started but never finished. If memory serves, it became a victim of November 2008. Thing is, I was almost done and it seems a pity to let all that good work go to waste. So without further ado, here it is.

Better late than never... )
quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Pure Love)
This one looked too fun not to try...

Pick up to 10 ships.
Describe them in less than 16 words.
Have your flist guess the ship.

Yes, my most obvious ship is included. No, the one in the icon isn't. I tried to not go for the more obscure, though I did go way back with some. You can probably guess most of them by looking at my icons. Keeping it to 16 words was surprisingly difficult.

It never hurts to guess... )

ETA: Only three left!!!  For those of you still playing, I'll give a few more couple more clues. One of the pairings appeared on a show that will be ending soon, even though both characters had long since left the building.  The other pairing appeared on a network that doesn't exisit anymore.  Two, actually!  The last one is on a show that is still going strong and, even though I've fallen behind, there are still quotes from that show on my sidebar.

quaggy: "Be Wary of Bored Writers" (Writer)
Okay, that's not really the name, but it might as well be for me. I'm seriously suffering from a lack of motivation to write. I mean, this goes far deeper that your usual run of the mill writer's block. I have two unfished memes waiting for me to get back to them! MEMES!!! So, I'm doing this in hopes of exorcizing some demons and that my fic writing muse will return to me. Lord, knows I would have enough to keep her busy.

I snagged this from [livejournal.com profile] zinke and [livejournal.com profile] caz963 by the way...

When you see this, post an excerpt from as many random works-in-progress stories as you like. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

Out of curiosity, I went back to check the last time I did a meme like this. It was two years ago and out of the nine snippets I posted, three still haven't seen the light of day. The Untitle Santos fic now has a name (you'll see it below), but it is no where close to being done. As for the Perspecitve series, "What Was Said" was posted as For The Best, but the other two aren't even in my active pile! Who knows if I'll ever get to them!

But that was then, this is now. For this meme, I've limited myself to the fics that I keep in my "active" (heh, yeah right) pile. These are the ones giving me the guilt trip every time I open My Documents folder. Yes, I have even more than that in the works, but either I've left them on the back burner or they are still in the early, early planning stages. And we are not even touching my orginial (as in non-fanfic) work! Sigh. Please come back, Writing Muse! I need you!

Snippets under here... )

Comments, criticisms, encouragement, prayers to the Writing Gods are always welcome.
quaggy: "Be Wary of Bored Writers" (Writer)
Gakked from many, many people.

Does anyone have any questions about any of my stories, or would be interested in a fic commentary? Or maybe a question about my writing techniques, such as they are?

Ask me a question about one of my stories. It can be about absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don’t hold back.

Seriously, go for it. There's a lot of stuff that I try to figure out for my fics that might not actually make it into the finale draft.  Everything is on the table.  West Wing fic, the other fandoms I've dabbled in (some more than others), stuff I'm currently working on... even my orginal stuff!  (Okay, granted, most of you haven't read anything that falls under the last two categories, but still.)   If you need a reminder, most of the stuff I've post is linked on my sidebar under the oh-so-creative title of "Quaggy's Fics".
quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Eeyore)
I can't believe I got my favorite character! I had convinced myself that just being a bookworm wouldn't necessarily mean that I was actually like Belle!!

She really is a funny girl... )
quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Text: Tell Us Why)

This meme was floating around a while back.  I couldn't do it at the time, so I thought I would now.

When you see this on your f-list, quote "The West Wing"

JOSH: What does it remind you of? (He mimics Ritchie) "I believe in hope, not fear!" ... "I'm a leader, not a politician!" ... "It's time for an American leader!" ... "America's earned a change!" .... "I before E except after C!" ... It's fortune cookie candidacy! These are important thinkers! And understanding them can be very useful, and it's not ever going to happen at a four-hour seminar when the President's got an embassy surrounded in Haiti or a keyhole photograph of a heavy water reactor or any of the 50 life-and-death matters that walk across his desk every day. I don't know if he's thinking about Immanuel Kant or not - I doubt it, but if he does, I am comforted at least in my certainty that he is doing his best to reach for all of it, and not just the McNuggets.    (Beat)    Is it possible we would be willing to require any less of the person sitting in that chair? The low road? I don't think it is.

(Quote from Political Affairs.  Meme from [info]cantbesilent.  Much thanks to both!)

quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Ghibli)

So, [personal profile] christinekh did it first.  And then [profile] cantbesilent followed suit.  So did [personal profile] caz963.  Who am I to snub such good company?

quaggy: Elizabeth looking back at Mr. Darcy (Grin)
So, I saw this on [personal profile] christinekh LJ.  And thought I would try it myself.  These are the rules…

If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or NaNoWriMo or what have you, post exactly one sentence (or more) from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favorite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

So I saw this meme over at both [personal profile] bexatious & [personal profile] dianora2, but I don't know who started it.  It looked like fun, so I thought I would try it myself.

I have no idea what this says about me.
