It would be because humans have needs (and they're both lonely people), and because they *are* good friends with history. Safe. Temporary.
Yeah, I can see that happening earlier in their relationship. As they stood during the series and afterwards, I think they'd both be too afraid to mess up what they have for something temporary. And that's not even factoring in the Casey angle. Not to mention that after being on the other side of the Casey/Sally thing, I don't Dana could ever be with someone in her circle just because she was lonely. Actually, now that I think about it, right after the Casey/Sally thing would probably have been the only time that Dan & Dana might have crossed that line. Interesting. I've never thought about that before.
