You're right, this really can stand on its own, out of the West Wing context, and the comments by others who say that they know people who have adopted and had similar experiences or who didn't adopt because of issues you touched on in the story are a testament to that. It would be a rich story even without the years of series provided back-story to go with the characters. I have a dear friend with fertility problems, and a family history of fertility problems and adoption, and this made me think of her.
