My Boys ~ The Estates of Hoffman

I really had no intention of watching My Boys. I haven’t really enjoyed a half hour sitcom since Sports Night. And it was on TBS of all channels. But some executive had the bright idea that a My Boys marathon would be excellent cross programming with the Super Bowl. I got hooked and hooked fast! I hope that this show someday comes out on DVD. It will have a place of honor right next to my Sports Night DVDs!
Like most My Boys episodes, I really enjoyed last night. It was interesting meeting PJ and Andy’s parents, especially, after the episode with PJ’s aunt. I love how PJ and Andy are slowly turning into their parents, but the fact that they left Andy’s storyline somewhat unresolved was unsettling. It made it harder to giggle over PJ’s phone conversation with the cute biologist!
I’m turning into such a Stephanie/Kenny shipper. I loved the shotgun thing. (Who knew Stephanie even had Kenny’s number!) And the language tapes were hilarious. Especially since Kenny was the only one who seemed to be able to pick up any Italian! Between that and her Animal Planet commentary to Lance about Brandon, Kenny and Mike’s pursuit of the Hot Mom (“And the Hunted becomes the Hunter!”), this was a great Stephanie episode.
Of course, the real news isn’t anything that happened in the episode. It’s the promo! PJ is going to Italy… and I honestly have no idea who with! I also like that the show has introduced three really viable candidates for PJ’s affection. The baseball player, Thorne and now the biologist! For course, good money is still on Brandon and would be even if the show had introduced 20 viable candidates, but would TPTB really get those two together this earlier in the show? I am firmly in the camp that Brandon and PJ will wind up together when they are both ready to settle down, but I don’t think either one of them is ready to raise little Cub fans just yet! And I could NOT stand it if their relationship became another Ross/Rachel angst train. I would sooner sign up for another 7 years of UST. (It was a very long time, but I think we Josh/Donna shippers were very lucky on a whole! But that’s the topic of a whole ‘nother post!)
And I have two theories about what the “shocking twist in the last two minutes” is. Either, PJ and Brandon DO go to Italy together and the twist is that Wendy is their fight attendant. (Awkward.) Or it could have nothing to do with PJ at all… Instead of showing up with Lance, Stephanie goes to Italy with Kenny! Afterall, the man did learn the language! :-D
And if all that’s not enough, it’s a double episode! I honestly can’t wait for next week!

Date: 2007-09-05 01:00 pm (UTC)If you haven't enjoyed a 1/2-hour show since Sports Night, you may want to give a glance to My Name is Earl or How I Met Your Mother. Just saying.

Date: 2007-09-06 12:51 am (UTC)And The Office is much, much fun. You either love it and get it or hate it. I have some coworkers that had it because they don't understand it.
I would also add Mad Men, but I know how you feel about shows on AMC. ;-)

Date: 2007-09-06 05:03 pm (UTC)I guess I'll try a few random episodes of HIMYM and Old Christine. If I get hooked, great. If not, no harm done. I have a feeling I will love The Office. But I'm going to stay stubborn with that one for a little while longer.

And the Andy's car episode making fun of Gary, IN so spot on. When we drive through Gary we old our noses its so awful.

Date: 2007-09-06 06:20 pm (UTC)You know, it some ways, being filled with all of those Chicago references, makes the show seem more real. I might not understand the references, but the fact that they are local references is universal, if that makes any sense at all. It's easy in my brain to hear the same conversation take place in DC if Bobby had flown into BWI and they were going to someplace in Falls Church. Local color is permates our lives so much that it's absense is sort of strange when you think about it.
One of the the things that's a little off about the West Wing is that it seems to take place in a bubble. There are no refernces to Metro, nobody wears their badge, and no one seems to know how long it will take to walk someplace. :-)
