F-List Drabbles Batch 4

Just one more batch to go! This has been a lot of fun!
Title: California
Word Count: 100
Fandom: Sports Night
Prompts: "Dan and Casey. With this quote: California is a fine place to live--if you happen to be an orange."
For:
flippet
Notes: With the show's tenth anniversary, I've been wondering what the characters were all up to in that amount of time. In this future, Casey is hosting a late night TV show like Conan. The prompt gave the piece an angsty tone.
It's ironic, really. All those years ago when everyone was talking about moving to LA, he was going to stay behind to be near his family. Ten years later, Danny's still in New York and he's out here with the palm trees and movie stars. He doesn't belong, but there's not a lot he can do about it. The show's a success. He's a success. You don't walk away from all that. Sometimes he can convince himself that he's happy. Then, Danny calls because he hasn't heard from him in a while....
He doesn't belong here. He's not an orange.
Title: Life Imitates Art
Word Count: 100
Fandom: Life With Derek
Prompts: "Lizzie watches old episodes of Press Gang"
For:
unoriginal_liz
Notes: A sort of crossover with Press Gang. I could see Lizzie enjoying working on the school newspaper.
Liz had a far more personal reaction to those old Press Gang episodes than her advisor from the Thompson high school newspaper could ever have anticipated. Lynda was so Casey, it was hysterical. Then, Spike showed up (in a leather jacket no less!) and it was like Derek strolled onto the screen. She nearly died laughing... that is, until Spike starting hitting on Lynda. Liz never realized that the phrase "reality shifts" was something you could feel physically.
So, five years later, when Derek and Casey eloped, Liz was the only one who wasn't surprised. She'd seen that headline coming.
Title: Unromantic
Word Count: 100
Fandom: West Wing
Prompts: "Josh and Donna - 'I heard you the first time'."
For:
cantbesilent
Notes: This quote was screaming for a Sorkin-style banter, but this post-series came out instead. Not that big of a surprise, if you know me.
"Donna? I said―"
"I heard you the first time."
She may have heard him, but she still wasn't saying anything. He's not good at the romance thing, but even he knows that he loused this one up big time.
"........I'm sorry, Donna."
"Why are you apologizing?"
"I should've thought this out more. I should've done better than lunch hour at my desk."
"But you're not sorry for asking?"
"God, I hope not!"
"Good. Josh?"
"Yeah?"
"Yes."
"Does..."
"Yes, I'll marry you. Yes."
Because, as far as Donna was concerned, his proposal may not have been romantic, but it WAS perfect.
Title: Who I Need
Word Count: 100
Fandom: Life
Prompts: "Reese tells Crews that she just broke up with Tidwell"
For:
gatsbyfan
Notes: I may or may not have solicited this one.
"What?"
"You and Tidwell.... Nevermind."
"No. What is it?
"None of my business."
"Crews!"
"It's just that... lately... you two don't seem to be... you two."
"Because we're not. His decision."
"I'm sorry."
"I'm not. He was who I needed at the time. He's not who I need now."
"I'm not seeing Jennifer anymore."
"Yeah, generally that's what happens when you get divorced."
"Yeah, you'd think so, right?"
".....Okay, I don't want to know."
"I―"
"Stop!"
"I was just going to say, Jennifer's who I was. That's not who I am now."
"Or who you need?"
"Or who I need."

Date: 2009-09-03 01:54 pm (UTC)(I have really been jonesing for SN lately. What is with that? Sadly, mostly all the fic I come across is slash and I'd rather it was more gen.)
(I also found myself dreaming of writing a J/D fic last night which then morphed into the fic being the dream. Mayhap I should do my own drabble challenge to get back in the swing.)

Date: 2009-09-04 01:58 am (UTC)I know what you mean. These drabbles are as slashy as I get... which is not at all. I would love to read some good Sports Night fanfic, but it's a little hard to find. I found some excellent Natallie/Dan fic a while back (good enough to actually make me ship the two of them a little), but nothing gen or even non-slash in a very long time.
You do a drabble challenge and I will return the favor with a prompt or two! :-)

I can hear their voices in my head so clearly, and that was the perfect ending. And I love the "that's what happens when you get divorced" line. Excellent. :)

Date: 2009-09-04 02:01 am (UTC)Thank you so much, Tues!! That's a huge deal for me, even when I'm totally used to writing for the characters and this was my first time trying to get Charlie and Dani's voice down!

Speaking of stretching yourself, I've been trying to work up the courage to put some Trek fic down on paper. Scary.

Date: 2009-09-04 02:54 am (UTC)So do I. Especially with Those Legislative People coming back next week, it would be nice to get my creative juices flowing over the long weekend.
Would you be terribly creeped out and/or offended if I stole your idea and asked for some drabble prompts of my own? It seems to be working well for you. :)

Date: 2009-09-04 02:15 am (UTC)Good! 'Cause that was my intention! :-D
I needed a reason for Lizzie to be finding episodes of a TV show that almost as old as she is (Possibly older. I'm too lazy to do the math.) Having her work on the school newspaper both makes sense for the drabble and with her character. It's something for her to be involved with that's Casey-like without being overshadowed by her big sister's legacy. If I remember correctly, Casey contributed to the newspaper from time to time, but was far more of a drama club/creative writing girl. Lizzie, I can see being editor-in-chief her senior year. As for Ed... well, I guess it depends on whether he keeps trying to follow in Derek's footsteps.

Date: 2009-09-04 02:22 am (UTC)But, truthfully, I can't imagine Josh managing a big, romantic proposal any more than I can imagine the two of them getting married without it being a courthouse run on their lunch hour. It's just not them!

Date: 2009-09-03 11:02 pm (UTC)Maybe I should throw out a Luke and Lorelei baby one. (I always loved the opening scene of that episode with Luke talking to Sid and Nancy.)

Date: 2009-09-04 02:28 am (UTC)Fair warning, the baby in question is probably going to be some version of Will.

Date: 2009-09-04 02:44 am (UTC)And Lorelei with a little boy. :-) So, how about twins in Quaggy's version of Gilmore Girls? (Which is the same as the regular version except it ended when Kirk and his night terrors ran screaming out into the night.)

Date: 2009-09-04 02:47 am (UTC)Personally, I always loved the cat kirk storyline too.
