General Thoughts on the Future...

Every time there's an LJ denial of service, it makes me wonder what I'll do if LJ no longer is around at all. Nothing lasts forever, especially not on the internet.
I signed up for a Dreamwidth account back when I first started, but it felt like I was starting from scratch. I just didn't see the point and I honestly still don't. If LJ goes up in smoke... I'm okay with letting that chapter of my life be over. I'll be sad to loose some of the more personal entries I've posted, but I can save those in other formats. My fic is all archived over at FF.Net. (I'd sign up for an AO3 account too if the idea of more cross-posting didn't give me a headache.) I'm now on Facebook, Twitter AND Google Plus, so I have plenty of platforms to keep in touch with the friends I've made. I haven't quite figured out what to do about
keytus_tv but I'm sure we'll come up with something if the time ever comes.
And that time may not ever come. We all might be done with LJ long before LJ calls it quits. We can't know what the future holds. All we can do is be grateful for what we have and be ready for what may come. And I'm really grateful for the chance to get to know you all here.
Okay, navel-gazing over. We now return to the usual random distractions!

Date: 2011-08-07 04:59 pm (UTC)DW had an announcement last month that they're working on a way to port certain kinds of communities - if they get that working, I think that DW will become much more feasable for much of fandom.
I've seen so many people say things like - 'I'm staying at LJ, because I support free speech, want to support the Russian bloggers', etc.
I find the sentiment nice and all, but.... I feel like I moved into a nice neighborhood. And a few years later, someone started growing weed a couple of blocks over. And the authorities didn't like that, so they came in and sprayed a ten-block area with bullets, just to nail the one guy growing weed. So now I'm living in a bullet-riddled house, in fear that I'm going to lose everything I've put into this home and neighborhood.
What does the sane person do? Do they stick around to 'support' the weed-grower (in this scenario, let's just say they don't mind the ganja)? No - the sane person who just wants to live in peace and quiet, and have friends over for tea without passing out the bullet-proof vests finds a new neighborhood to live in.
That's what I fear it's coming to. And I don't want to lose what I've put into this place. This is my life, and my history here. I'm tired of living in a war zone, and I'm sorry for the others living in the zone, but until the neighborhood watch can promise to protect the neighborhood from stray bullets, I see little reason to stay. I can't see how allowing yourself to be pummeled is helpful to the 'weed-grower' in any way.
(That scenario was off-the-cuff, I realize it has some weirdness.)
FB, Twitter and G+ are, like you said, good for 'keeping in touch with friends', but I'm in this for topic-based conversations, both with people I know, and people I don't - and those platforms are kind of lousy for that. :-(

Date: 2011-08-10 04:33 pm (UTC)I get what you're saying, but to take your analogy and run with it, I'm like the old lady on the corner who's just too old and stubborn to start over.
I also think it's partly where I am in terms of fandom. This LJ was primarily for posting fic. I then branched out a little into memes, picspams, etc. But I haven't been posting fic much lately and probably will be posting less in the future. It would be nice to have a place to do picspams about shows and movies I like, but they take a lot of work and frankly I have two I wanted to do since January and I still haven't. I like having LJ, but I don't need the outlet so much I have to actively look for it's replacement.
Keytus TV is a different story, but it's one that we'll have to decide jointly. No sense in transferring K-TV to DW if most K-Kids don't make the jump. There are just to many factors to predict what will happen.
